UPDATED in R 5.1 in May 2005 HelpMeDoMyExercise - (a multimedia graded worksheet) is a test and learn program with evaluation for students working on a subject prepared by the teacher. This preparation will require 6 or 10 to 12 hours of work (maybe more) if he wants the students to deal with more than 10 questions that seem a minimum, imagine the answers and get the illustrations in the necessary graphic treatment to fit them into the program (gif and jpg files encoding). But the program is really rich of interactivity and creativity. For example, beside the evaluation, there is a possibility for the student to view his proper answers placed in a different context of sentences where they should still be relevant. He can also print that new page with the pictures he has selected from a picture bank. Teachers must prepare and format the pictures to the specified standards. Goal for the teacher : generate a rich, interactive learning sequence enabling the student to improve his knowledge and express ideas, opinions, print a detailed worksheet. First, the student tries to answer simple questions before his answers become imbedded into a new context. The worksheet will be evaluated and printed with the illustrations he has chosen without having to use any word processor or other device except the Internet browser and a printer. No need to work with an internet connexion to do so. These files are prepared for an 'off line' activity. Three educative activities for the student in the worksheet: 1/ Answer simple questions in a web form that is connected to an evaluation system : a correct answer will try to be identified from 3 possible alternatives. If required, (when errors are encountered), the student will have a glimpse of these correct answers but penalties will be given for doing so if he submits his tests to a too frequent evaluation. 2/ The student will also have the opportunity of enriching his worksheet by writing out his own text of comment concerning each item. This text will be printed in the worksheet too. Moreover, the student's answers will be embedded in other sentences proposed by the computer (prepared by the teacher) where they are also expected to produce good meaning and an enriched text. 3/ The student will finally choose his own illustrations in a pre-offered picture bank from which he'll select/drag and drop a name file into his working area. The teacher will prepare images that should NOT exceed 300 pixels in width and 220 in height and introduce their names in the picture bank. The final worksheet will show into Internet explorer (5) or more recent (800*600 or 1024*768 width screen accepted). Magic, isn't it ??? ... but a bit tricky to build up ! TO SUM UP TASKS : For the students : View an html file in a WINDOWS INTERNET BROWSER not having to work 'on line'. Start model.htm (this file could be renamed as you wish). Redo questions that do not correspond to what the system expects the student to do. Print an evaluated and illustrated worksheet For the teacher: Create a program using the AideCreation.htm file (a special data form adapted to generate a personal worksheet and produce a view.gif data file) You are supposed to have collected your information aon a subject first and prepared the picture files respecting the maximum size. Click on "AideCreation.htm" Prepare some ten questions. The system will accept up to twenty. Prepare dual pictures, some (for the worksheet) with 200 pixels MAXIMUM in width (bigger pictures will be automatically reduced, waste of time and space), and other mini pictures will be inserted in the layer popup menus but here they should not exceed 150 pixels (+-20%)in width and 150 (+-20%) in height. View the model called Paris.htm The name of the picture files should be longer than 8 caracters and not bigger than 15 caracters to be best viewed in the picture bank: for example, bank.jpg is acceptable, but too short whereas mybestviewoflondon.gif is too long. Please mention the extension (.gif or .jpg for each file). Avoid blanks in the naming of the files as the system will split the file name into two parts and the picture will not be found. Example of a preparation : The data form will generate a code like this : Question 1 : What's the most famous monument of Paris ? Prepare up to 3 answers rp[between 1 and 20] are priorities : (rp[x] are the answers : 2 alternative answers beside the main answer will be accepted) So, for question 1 ... rp[1] : "the tour Eiffel" rp[51)= "tour Eiffel" rp[101)= "The Eiffel tower" (thee proposals) the popup menu (layer) will include the mini picture (130 pixels / 150 pixels or so) and a short text pictures prepared : eiffel.jpg (300 pixels maximum) and minbieiffel.jpg (130 pixels) short text : 'this world wide famous tower bears the name of it's inventor, a French engineer.' Question 2 : What's the name of the river flowing through Paris ? rp[2] : "la Seine"; rp[52)= "le fleuve Seine" rp[102)= "la seine" the popup menu will include a mini picture of the river La Seine and a short text pictures prepared : seine.jpg et miniseine.jpg IN CASE OR ERRORS : No showing of any question when clicking on 'model.htm' : Look for the inverted commas sign and check they form a couple in each data group : one for the opening after the sign = and the other one at the end of the line. Should you wish to personalize your application, rename model.htm by whateveryoulike.htm ... These files are ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for the program to work : fld.gif fondcahier.gif titintex.gif telfond.jpg prev.jpg view.gif moredetails.gif vide.gif minivide.gif petitvide.gif grandvide.gif + your own jpg ou gif pictures preferably light weight (120k each at most) The most frequent errors that will prevent the viewing unless detected are : 1/ opening inverted comas without closing them 2/ watch out for the use of simple and double-quotes : ex : rp[1]= "he said : 'hello' "; (do not use double quotes twice) 3/ references to file names that do not exist. 4/ do not modify the html and javascript code written in black. NO NEED TO GIVE THE CREATION FILES (.doc OR .rtf OR .txt) to the students. They should remain the teacher's property. No need to give them this _read1st.txt file. Should you wish to crypt the answer data, just ask how to. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JP Palasse Teacher's tutor at the French Institute for Training Teachers in Dijon, France. jppalasse@yahoo.fr (for copyright usage, please contact by mail : Any publication on the internet or wide duplication on CD's of a worksheet using this model without prior agreement of Jean-Pierre Palasse would be considered as a copyright infringement) The author will encourage you to publish something using this template if he thinks the work done is worth helping students to learn with ICT.
